The growth in the popularity of Irish Music over the past couple of decades has increased the interest in learning Irish Songs. Many of these songs are hundreds of years old and due to their enduring quality, still have enormous appeal today. Various elements in the songs are responsible for their survival over the decades. The tune / melody and poetry contained in these songs are of tremendous importance, but the historical perspective and story associated with the song are of equal importance. Originally, most of these songs were composed in Gaeilge (Irish language); however, many have been translated into English (Bearla) and are sung all over the world.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to those who have gone before us who had the insight and wisdom to collect most of these songs and preserve them for eternity. People like the late Frank Harte, Joseph Heaney, Delia Murphy and Sarah Makem, to name but a few, have most definitely earned the title “Keeper of the Song.”

In the singing tradition in Ireland it is the Song, and not the Singer, that commands the greatest respect. Every effort is made to ensure that the song remains as the center of attention.
